Artists 2024

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen is Artist in Residence this year. Together with the Dutch composer Tijn Wybenga, he puts together part of the Jazz te Gast program. Seventy-five top musicians descend on Zuidhorn to give 25 concerts on seven outdoor stages. This year the festival starts on Friday evening, June 7. On Saturday, June 8, the musicians of the Greenhouse (selected by Avishai and Tijn) will perform all afternoon, ending with a unique joint concert in the evening.

Avishai Cohen is recognized worldwide as a musician with his own sound and a searching spirit, an always creative player-composer who is open to multiple jazz movements and is active as a leader, composer and accompanist. Aside from acclaimed work with his quartet in recent years, and previously his trio work under the name Triveni, the trumpeter has also recorded and toured the world as part of the Mark Turner Quartet, the SFJAZZ Collective, Jazz100, Zakir Hussain, and the 3 Cohen's Sextet - with his sister, clarinetist-saxophonist Anat, and brother, saxophonist Yuval. Appointed Artistic Director of the International Jerusalem Festival, Cohen has also been named a Rising Star in the DownBeat Critics Poll three consecutive times.

Tijn Wybenga | Artist Entrepreneur

This edition, composer, conductor and artistic director Tijn Wybenga has been appointed as Artist Entrepreneur. In his work Wybenga combines modern classical, jazz and electronics with improvisation, dance and theater. As a composer and conductor he was New Maker for two years at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam. There he founded his 14-piece ensemble AM.OK (Amsterdam Modern Orchestra). An orchestra with top musicians from the Dutch jazz scene. AM.OK played at the North Sea Jazz festival and has been presented several times by NTR on national television.
